Teachers In Impoverished Duquesne School District Ratify Contract

CBS Pittsburgh

DUQUESNE (AP) – Thirty-five teachers in a financially-troubled school district have ratified a new contract after working without one for two years.

Paul Long, the court-appointed receiver of the Duquesne City School District, says he hopes to approve the deal on behalf of the district at a meeting Oct. 29.

The district teaches only 350 students from kindergarten through sixth grade. Students in grades 7-12 attend classes in the nearby East Allegheny or West Mifflin Area school districts.

A fact-finder in April rejected the district’s proposal to tie any teacher raises to student achievement improvements.

The district is in financial recovery, so Long must submit financial changes the new contract will require to an Allegheny County judge who oversees the district’s financial recovery plan.
